Not Twins? Its Double Pregnancy!

As I was enjoying my morning coffee while watching the morning show on 7, I learned that it is possible for double pregnancy can happen to anyone... especially if your hormones are always on the overdrive.

So I decided to google it and found this article:

"A woman who is expecting a baby has stunned doctors after a routine ultrasound visit revealed that she had become pregnant for a second time — a condition so rare that there only ten other recorded cases.

Julia Grovenburg, 31, had an appointment for an ultrasound check on an 11-week-old foetus, a baby girl she and her husband, Todd, have named Jillian — only to be told that she was carrying a separate baby, two weeks younger.
“We feel very blessed, but the truth is that I gagged, I started getting sick, that’s not a joke,” said Mrs Grovenburg, an American, of the moment that she found out she had become pregnant a second time. “My ultrasound [technician] Susan was in total, utter shock. My husband was laughing.”
Unlike twins, which are conceived at the same time, Mrs Grovenburg has two foetuses because of a process known as “superfetation”, where embryos are conceived at different times.

The second foetus is male, and the couple have called him Hudson. Jillian’s due date is December 24 and her brother’s is January 10. Doctors have warned, however, that both babies will probably be delivered at the same time, in early December.
“We tried for three years to have kids, and nothing ever happened,” said Mrs Grovenburg, from Arkansas. “We even refused to do in vitro or fertility drugs because we didn’t want multiples. I guess God was having the last laugh.”
Dr Karen Boyle, of the Greater Baltimore Medical Centre, told ABC News that superfetation was extremely rare. “There is no prevalence or incidence in the literature. I could only find about ten reported cases,” she said.
Superfetation is common in some species of animals, including rodents, horses, sheep and marsupials, but extremely rare in humans. Extraordinarily, two cases were recorded in Britain in 2007. Two couples conceived children three weeks apart.
Dr Boyle said that, depending on the time between the two conceptions, superfetation could be dangerous for the younger baby, who could be born prematurely. “It [the second conception] can happen up to 24 days later than the first conception, and then you’re putting the second baby at risk for lung development problems."
In the Grovenburgs' case, Dr Boyle said that two weeks would not put the younger baby at much of a risk for health problems.
Mrs Grovenburg said: “It’s fun — we feel blessed to have something so rare and at this point they are both totally healthy.”
Mr Grovenburg said of the moment they were told of the second baby: “[We were] both in shock. We were trying to put the timelines together. We had known she had had a migraine and been at the hospital and actually had a pregnancy test at the time that one would’ve been conceived,” he said, adding that the test was negative.
Patrick O’Brien, consulting obstetrician and spokesman for the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, said: “It’s a rare thing because when you conceive, your hormones change dramatically. Those changes stop you ovulating and they stop you conceiving.”
In May 2007, in Benfleet, Essex, Harriet and Thomas Mullineux, conceived three weeks apart, were born to Amelia Spence and George Herrity.
“It is hard to get our heads around the fact that I was pregnant with two babies at the same time and they aren’t twins,” Ms Spence said at the time. “We looked at the screen and the doctor pointed out that one foetus still looked like a blob, whereas the other had four visible limbs. It was such a marked difference. It was really strange to see. The doctor said that he had only read about it in textbooks.”"

So what is double pregnancy? It is certainly not about being pregnant with twins. It is the situation that occurs when two foetuses exist in the uterus after eggs have been fertilised at different times.

Some literature described double pregnancy as a situation when a woman either

(a), has 2 eggs implant that are from two separate ovulations- within a day or two of each other, or

(b) the woman has a rare condition where she has either 2 separate uterus' (only heard of this once), or a divided uterus and an egg implants in both sides. It is very, very, very uncommon and usually either one or both of the fetus's don't survive.

Well this is certainly a new information for me and to date there have been only 10 successful and survived cases recorded on this entire earth. God certainly works in mysterious ways!!

Changes in Mama that Miya have brought

Being a mother is an excitement and enticement and a growth. It is the possibilty that haunts and delights the young girl as she grows to womanhood. It is a part of the fantasy, both her longing for it and her fear of it. The months of pregnancy highlight all the richness of the remembered and internalized experience about mothering. The birth itself brings forth the baby, until now a fantasy, into reality. This real baby is a constant changing, crying, knowing being, and for me the delight of this experience has been one of the most important parts of my life as a women.

-this is Mama Miya's formal apology sebab marah kat Miya yg cranky. Mama paham Miya tak sihat, teething & uncomfy... Its just that I got a bit stressed out by Miya's unusual behavior. Love you, sayang!

Miya masak Lemang until Demam

In the morning of Hari Raya's eve, Mama & Miya sibuk mula memasak juadah raya. Among it is the making of Lemang. Since we are unable to get buluh to cook the lemang, we improvise it by baking the cooked pulut in a tray in the oven.

The result is....

We made rendang hitam, a suitable match for the lemang.

We also made our own nasi impit, but tak brape menjadi...

We also made kuah kacang by using Peanut butter chunky. Sedap..tapi terover lemak. Boleh gemuk kalau makan banyak-banyak tu.

Then, petang tu we packed a bit of the dish and bring it to rumah Pak Ngah Andin. We all berbuka there, solat jemaah Magrib and then bertakbir raya bersama-sama. Mak Ngah Shaliz cooked rendang ayam, rendang tok, sambal paru, cake pisang & case chocolate. Even ada banyak kuih raya. Semuanya sedap.

Then we went back home with a full tummy & happy heart.

Tapikan...

Malam tu, tetibe temperature Miya naik. O nooooooooo... Miya demam...

Kejap naik kejap turun..

Tapi Miya tak cranky, Miya is still in raya mood. Miya pakai baju cantik-cantik & skype dgn sedara mara back in Malaysia. Happy sangat Miya tunjuk laku & menyampaikan ucapan Hari Raya to them.

Dunno Miya demam sebab apa. Perubahan cuaca? Teething? Something else?

-No flu, no cough, no tummy ache. Just rise & fall of temperature.

Short Vacation- Black Rock & Brighton Beach

Di suatu hari yang agak gloomy, papa & mama letak Miya dalam carseat. Then papa drove while mama bebel to papa about the direction.

Miya rasa bosan dengar mama membebel so Miya tidur aje la.

Then bila Miya buka mata aje, Miya nampak laut.

Eeeeee... Apa kat tengah laut tu?

Then papa explain that itu lah HMVS Cerberus, sebuah kapal perang Australia yang dibina pada tahun 1860s. Kapal tu banyak berjasa. Now kapal tu di biarkan duduk kat situ as historical monument. Tapi agak sedih coz kapal tu dah cam karam aje.

Lepas tu, we all masuk kereta and papa drive lagi. Suddenly matahari keluar. Hari jadi terang. Then mama sibuk-sibuk bebel kat papa suruh cari parking, kita pegi jalan kat beach.

This is Miya's 1st trip to the beach. Kaki Miya tak pernah touch on beach sand ever since Miya was born. So this is indeed a new experience for Miya.
Mama bawa Miya dekat dengan air.

Miya mula resah. Kenapa air ni macam nak tangkap Miya? Kenapa air ni ada bunyi garang?
Mama, Miya rasa Miya tak suka la air ni. Dia cam jahat. Nak balik la Mama. Tak nak la dekat dengan air tu mama.

Then bila air laut tu sentuh kaki Miya, Miya nangis. Miya takut. So Mama bawak Miya balik.

Tapi sebelum balik tu, Miya kutip some seashells. Rupa dia pelik-pelik and ada macam-macam warna. Hmm..Miya suka la..

So itu la cerita Miya's trip to the beach, ye kawan-kawan.

New Poll on the go- Man changes after being a Fathers?

I was doing some reading in parenting and I found this article:

"Kelly Lambert, chair of the psychology department at Randolph-Macon College, has been studying the male California deer mouse. She found that Poppa Mouse takes care of the babies — hanging with them, grooming them and keeping a close eye on them — whenever he's not out shopping for cheese. (Read more about the study, here.)

Her study suggests that there is such a thing as a "Daddy Brain"; that the male brain is biochemically altered by becoming a father, changes already well documented in females — mice and human mommies, alike."

So I'm having a poll for mommies to share about their darling hubby's changes. You ladies can also share the detailes at the comment section. Appreciate these contribution because I think I will come up with a great article, depending on the outcome from the poll and input given.

Brain matters?

“The term cognitive development is defined as the intellectual growth that begins at birth and

continues through adulthood. Children begin learning from the moment they are born by looking, listening, and interacting with people and objects (Gleitman, 1981). Cognitive development is the development of the learning structures and systems in the brain.”

For surely we all know that, but seldom we remember (and that’s why we tend to compare kids).

Yes, all children develop at different rates. But we as caregiver can help them developer faster by giving it a little boost.

The key to helping them develop successfully is understanding their individual needs and interacting with them as much as possible. To understand the role of caregivers in facilitating the process of the cognitive development of their infants and toddlers.

The main thing to remember is that you can take an active role in the children’s cognitive development by playing with them, singing to them, planning stimulating activities for them, reading to them, and encouraging them to explore their environment.

Infants and toddlers are like sponges; they absorb everything about their environment (Lally, Torres, & Phelps, 1993)!

Infants and toddlers explore their world and learn through sensory and motor experiences (Gleitman,1981). They learn that things have different textures, colors, shapes, and sizes. Infants and toddlers learn to discriminate your voice and your face from others.

Talking, reading, and singing or playing music to your infants and toddlers will foster their cognitive growth (Feierabend, 1996).

Talking to your infant or toddler is soothing and the child learns from the sounds. When you talk to an infant or toddler, hold the child or stand very close to his/her face. The child may try to imitate your words or facial expressions. Have conversations with older children and listen when they try to talk back (Mahn).

Read to your infants or toddlers every day. They

are eager to hear language. Reading helps the children learn the sounds of our language and is very important for cognitive growth (Mahn).

Music also stimulates cognitive development in children. Sing songs and play music for the children. Choose music that is interesting and imaginative for the children (Feierabend,1996).

There are many different types of activities and materials that are designed to help promote cognitive development. The following are just a few examples.

See how many you are currently incorporating into your daily activities.

Infants

  • Hold a rattle in front of an infant’s face and move it slowly from side to side.
  • Hang a mobile over the crib of a non-sitting infant. He/she will enjoy watching it.
  • Play classical music for infants.Play the recital of the Quran does also helps to sooth the baby’s emotion and stimulate the brain’s wave.
  • Read to infants every day. Reading helps children develop early literacy skills (Mahn).
  • Sing and talk to infants during feeding time and while changing diapers.
  • Give older infants a set of nesting blocks. They will enjoy taking them apart and putting them back together.
  • Play peek-a-boo with infants.
  • Place an unbreakable mirror in a place where an infant can see his/her reflection.

Toddlers

  • Read to toddlers every day. Name objects in the book and let the children point to them.
  • Hide a toy behind your back and encourage the child to find it.
  • If the child is saying words, such as ball, expand on them. Say, “Did you find that ball?” This may help the child begin to use sentences (Mahn).
  • Put pictures of familiar items on the walls at the child’s eye level. Encourage the child to name the objects.
  • Encourage the children to stack blocks, arrange toys in a line and unload/reload the toy box.
  • Sing songs to the children and encourage them to sing with you.

These are the few things that many experts have suggested for caregiver to do, but I'm sure many moms out there had tried more interesting and fun activities. As for me and Miya, we sing, dance, watch educational videos, we cook, we clean, we even play dress up and etc.

From the poll I held earlier, we can see that mommies out there have already been having activities with their little ones to stimulate those little minds.

By now I believe, most moms have realized that as you begin to develop activities for your children, keep in mind that young children of the same chronological age often function on many different developmental levels. You must observe each child carefully to see how you can adapt the activity to meet individual needs. Start with simple activities and then move to more complex ones. Be sure to offer a variety of materials and activities that promote cognitive development. By providing the children with many choices, they can participate in the ones with which they are the most comfortable.

Most important, have fun!
